Instagram’s algorithm overhaul will reward “original content” and punish aggregators

Instagram is overhauling its Reels recommendation algorithm to promote “original content,” a move that will have a significant impact on aggregation accounts and other accounts that primarily repost other users’ work. The company has also changed the way Reels is ranked in an attempt to give smaller accounts more distribution within the app.

In a blog post announcing the changes, the company said it was trying to “correct” its ranking system so that accounts with fewer followers can more easily expand their reach. The company explains: “Historically, because of how we rank content, creators with large followings and aggregators of retweeted content have gained greater influence in recommendations than smaller original content creators. “We believe it’s important to correct this to give all creators a more equal opportunity to break through to new audiences. “

It’s unclear exactly how Instagram will adjust its recommendations to make them “more equal,” but the company says the algorithm will no longer prioritize accounts with more followers. “As these viewers interact with the content, the top-performing set of reels are shown to the wider audience, and then the best The changes will be rolled out to a wider audience “in the coming months,” so it may be a while before creators see the effects of this update.

However, the app’s changes around “original content” may be more straightforward. Instagram said that when it detects two identical pieces of content, it will proactively replace the reposted Reels with the “original” clips in the recommendations. Accounts sharing Reels will also be tagged to clearly identify the original creator. The changes won’t apply to creators who make “significant” changes, such as recording voiceovers or reaction clips, or posts that are “substantially edited to become a meme,” the company said.

Aggregated accounts that “duplicate” others’ posts will be subject to more severe penalties. Instagram said it will stop recommending Reels entirely if these accounts post unoriginal content 10 or more times in the past 30 days. This change may impact the influence of popular aggregation accounts that share clips from other users, often to promote affiliate shopping links and other programs.

It’s worth noting that all of these changes currently only apply to Reels and not other types of posts on Instagram (a spokesperson said the company will “explore expansion to other formats in the future.”) The changes also reflect broadly Instagram has tried to reduce the importance of follower count. This has frustrated some creators, who complain that most fans don’t see their posts in their feeds.

In recent weeks, Instagram head Adam Mosseri asked several creators who shared their accounts on Threads and demanded to know why their posts weren’t visible to more of their followers. In a recent exchange, nature photographer Nate Luebbe, who has 142,000 followers on Instagram, asked Mosseri why a popular post only attracts about 20% of his followers. In , Mosseri says this is how the Instagram algorithm works.

So while these latest changes are specific to Reels, the update suggests Meta will continue to look at other metrics beyond follower count. This may be disappointing for someone who has built a large audience over the years, but Meta seems to think this is a better way to level the playing field for smaller accounts.

Instagram previously updated its algorithm to prioritize original content. Mosseri said at the time that he did not want the app to “overvalue aggregators,” although he admitted it was difficult to “determine” when a piece of content was original. However, if the company is still trying to “correct” the imbalance a full two years later, whatever changes it makes at the time may not be enough.

A passionate call to action

Andre Pavei, Director IT, CEVA Logistics

Andre Pavei, Director IT, CEVA Logistics

In today’s fast-paced world, logistics companies are under tremendous pressure to deliver goods on time, maintain customer satisfaction and optimize operational efficiency. Deadlines are looming, shipping spans continents, and customers need instant updates. In this high-pressure environment, success depends on one key factor: agile.

Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand the power of agility. As someone who is passionate about Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Revolution and I can attest to its transformative impact on the logistics industry. I’ve seen how this technology, the digital workforce, can collaborate with human workers to streamline processes, reduce errors, and improve overall performance. In addition, it enables logistics providers to work more proactively with customers to ensure timely delivery and quality service. Robotic Automation Enables companies to outperform competitors and build lasting customer loyalty.

Why?because RPA is not just about automation; It’s about orchestration. It frees up human employees to engage in higher value activities. result? It’s a logistics symphony where messages flow effortlessly, proactive communication flourishes and deliveries arrive with extreme accuracy and speed.

What is RPA actually?

RPA refers to soft robots that imitate human behavior by automating repetitive tasks. These digital assistants work alongside employees, handling day-to-day activities and freeing up valuable time for strategic decisions.

What can it do for you in the real world of logistics?

● RPA seamlessly collects and enters data across portals, websites, internal applications and banking systems.

● For example, 3PL providers can automate loading and intermodal pricing to provide customers with faster, more accurate service (www.inbound Logistics.com).

● RPA supports real-time services, such as automatic pickup requests via email.

● Intelligent software robots extract details from incoming emails, schedule work and provide instant updates to customers.

● RPA eliminates manual re-keying, ensuring accurate quotes, tracking and invoicing.

● RPA speeds up the invoicing process by extracting relevant data from various sources.

● Timely invoicing improves cash flow and strengthens customer relationships.

● RPA enables logistics companies to easily compare rates between carriers and 3PL providers.

● Instant insights enable better decision-making and cost optimization.

● RPA analyzes historical data, predicts demand fluctuations, and assists in production capacity planning.

● Logistics providers can effectively allocate resources and avoid bottlenecks.

● RPA sends alerts about low inventory levels, expired goods, or supply chain disruptions.

● Proactive inventory management prevents delays and ensures on-time delivery (www.inbound Logistics.com).

Did I forget something? Yes, I probably do, not on purpose, but because of the versatility.

real world numbers

Let’s dig into the statistics:

● Productivity improvement: Research predicts that RPA will increase logistics productivity by 25% to 70% (www.logisticmgmt.com).

●Cost reduction: Due to the implementation of RPA, logistics costs can be reduced by 20% to 40% (www.logisticmgmt.com).

● Global growth: By 2021, the logistics robot market revenue is expected to reach US$22.4 billion, and annual robot shipments will grow from 40,000 units to 620,000 units. (www.logisticmgmt.com).

The power of proactive communication:

83% of customers Say they are willing to pay more for brands that provide superior customer service (PwC).

61% of customers Expect companies to anticipate their needs (Salesforce).

These statistics scream one thing clearly: Customers crave proactive communication. However, manually tracking shipments and updating customers can be a time-consuming and error-prone task.

This is where RPA comes into play. Reduce customer anxiety, increase trust, and gain a significant competitive advantage.

Delivery speed and accuracy:

63% of online shoppers Shopping cart abandonment due to slow delivery times (Baymard Institute).

46% of businesses Lost revenue due to inaccurate order fulfillment (Invesp).

In the age of Amazon Prime, speed and accuracy are non-negotiable. RPA can be your secret weapon: automated workflows Save valuable time and ensure flawless executionresulting in faster deliveries, happier customers and healthier profits.

Optimize internal processes:

37% of logistics professionals Consider manual processes as a major productivity impediment (logistics management).

28% of logistics costs Stems from inefficiency (McKinsey & Company).

the road ahead

As logistics IT professionals, we must embrace RPA:

Training and upskilling: Enabling employees to work effectively with robots.

continuous improvement: Regularly evaluate RPA performance and make adjustments as needed.

ethical considerations: Ensure transparency and accountability in automation.

strategic plan: Identify processes suitable for automation.

Change management: Get employees ready for their shift.

in conclusion:

Dear logistics community, let us leverage the full potential of RPA. Imagine a world where customers receive instant updates, warehouses operate with automated precision, and logistics excellence is the norm. As I reflect on my journey from skepticism to success, I urge you to explore RPA to transform your operations and lead you toward a more efficient, customer-centric logistics landscape.

Remember, the future belongs to those who embrace innovation. Let us ride the RPA wave and redefine the greatness of logistics!

Cyber Threats: Step-by-Step Attack Demonstration

cyber attack

Follow a realistic cyberattack simulation, covering 6 steps from initial access to data exfiltration. Learn how to go undetected by attackers using the simplest tools, and why you need multiple choke points in your defense strategy.

Surprisingly, most cyberattacks are not particularly sophisticated, technologically advanced, or rely on zero-day tools that exploit edge-case vulnerabilities. Instead, they often use common tools and exploit multiple vulnerability points. By simulating real-world cyberattacks, security teams can test their detection systems to ensure they have multiple choke points and demonstrate the value of cybersecurity to leadership.

In this article, we demonstrate real-world attacks that can easily occur in many systems. Attack simulations are developed based on the MITER ATT&CK framework, Atomic Red Team, Cato Networks’ field experience, and public threat intelligence. Finally, we explain why a holistic security approach is critical to cybersecurity.

The importance of simulating real-life cyberattacks

Simulating a real attack on a network has three advantages:

  1. You can test your detections and ensure they identify and block attacks. This is very important for dealing with common attacks (the most common type of attack).
  2. Real attacks can help you demonstrate that your defense relies on multiple choke points. Attacks are almost never the result of a single point of failure, so a single detection mechanism is not enough.
  3. Real-life attacks can help you demonstrate to leadership the importance of network monitoring. They demonstrate how true visibility of the network can provide insights into breaches, enabling effective mitigation, remediation, and incident response.

Attack process

The attack flow demonstrated below is based on six steps:

  1. initial visit
  2. Ingress tool transfer
  3. Discover
  4. Credential dump
  5. Lateral movement and persistence
  6. Data leakage

These steps were chosen because they represent common techniques prevalent in attacks.

Now, let’s dive into each step.

1. Initial access

The attack begins with spear phishing to establish initial access to the network. For example, send an email to employees with a lucrative job offer. This email has an attachment. On the backend, the malicious attachment in the email runs a macro and exploits a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Office via Hoaxshell, an open source reverse shell.

“Defense-in-depth strategies may come into play as early as this initial access vector,” said Dolev Attiya, Threat Security Engineer at Cato Networks. “Phishing emails and Hoaxsheel may have been captured by anti-virus engines scanning the network. Email gateways , antivirus software on the endpoint, or through network visibility and command and control to capture network artifacts generated by malicious files to increase the chance of catching an attack.

cyber attack
cyber attack

2. Ingress tool transfer

cyber attack

Once access is gained, the attacker transfers various tools to the system to assist in further attacks. This includes Powershell, Mimikatz, PSX, WMI, and other native tools.

Attiya added: “Many of these tools are already built into the Microsoft Windows framework. Typically, administrators use them to control systems, but attackers can also use them for similar (albeit malicious) purposes.”

3. Discover

Today, attackers explore the network to identify valuable resources such as services, systems, workstations, domain controllers, ports, additional credentials, active IPs, and more.

“Think of this step as if the attacker is a visitor to a big city for the first time. They ask people how to get somewhere, find buildings, check street signs, and learn how to get directions. That’s what attackers do,” Attiyah said. what is being done.

cyber attack

4. Credential dump

Once valuable resources are identified, previously added tools are used to extract the credentials of multiple users to access compromised systems. This helps attackers prepare for lateral movement.

5. Lateral movement and persistence

Armed with these credentials, attackers can move laterally across the network and access other systems. The attacker’s goal is to expand their foothold by gaining access to as many users and devices as possible and gaining as much privileges as possible. This allows them to hunt for sensitive files that can be stolen. For example, if an attacker obtains an administrator’s credentials, they can gain access to a large portion of the network. In many cases, an attacker may proceed slowly and schedule the task for a later period of time to avoid detection. This allows attackers to progress through a network for months without arousing suspicion or being identified.

cyber attack

“I can’t overstate the ubiquity of Mimikatz,” said Etay Maor, senior director of security strategy. “It’s very effective at extracting passwords, and cracking them is easy and only takes seconds. Everyone uses Mimikatz, even state actors. By”.

6. Data leakage

Finally, identify valuable data. It can extract files from the web to file sharing systems in the cloud, encrypt them against ransomware, and more.

How to protect against cyberattacks

Effective protection against attackers requires multiple layers of detection. Each layer of security in the kill chain must have policy management and overall coordination to prevent attackers from successfully executing their plans. This approach helps predict every possible move by attackers to achieve a stronger security posture.

To watch the entire attack and learn more about defense-in-depth strategies, watch the entire masterclass here.

The world’s largest 3D printer can build a house in 80 hours

The University of Maine just unveiled the world’s largest polymer 3D printer. The new printer, named “Factory of the Future 1.0” (FoF 1.0), can print objects up to 96 feet long, 32 feet wide and 18 feet high. It’s also relatively fast, capable of printing up to 500 pounds per hour. That’s the equivalent of three people, once an hour.

It can dynamically switch between printing technologies to accommodate different aspects of complex jobs. The printer can switch between large-scale additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, continuous tape placement and robotic arm operation. These technologies make printers particularly suitable for many industries, including housing, infrastructure and military vehicle development.

Dr Habib Dagher, director of the university’s Center for Advanced Structures and Composites, said most of the materials it makes are recyclable, so “you can basically deconstruct it, grind it up if you want” and “do it again “Maine. To this end, the printer prioritizes bio-based materials such as wood residues.

The technology seems like a good way to build large amounts of affordable housing quickly, which is what some proponents think. “By 2030, Maine is expected to need 80,000 additional housing units, many of which will be built specifically for households earning at or below the area median income,” said Mark Wiesendanger, Maine Housing Development Director. “This effort creates another way to produce quality affordable housing while further reducing costs and utilizing abundant wood residues from Maine’s sawmills.” Associated Press It is suggested that the printer “might one day create entire communities.” Specs suggest it should be able to build an average single-story home in about 80 hours.

However, this is America, so people aren’t building this thing to help the homeless. University of Maine researchers received funding from the Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Defense and Department of Energy. These government agencies want a return on investment, so printers may also be used to build lightweight, rapidly deployable vessels such as submarines and other maritime vehicles. Senator Susan Collins called the printer “critical to our national security.”

FoF 1.0 There is a Brother printer on the University of Maine campus that was the previous record holder for the largest 3D printer in the world. It has been used to create a 600-square-foot single-family home made from wood fiber and bioresin materials. However, the new printer is four times the size. Fortunately, these two models are co-located and can handle different aspects of the same project at the same time.

The University of Maine is about to break ground on a new research laboratory called the Green Engineering and Materials (GEM) Factory of the Future. This will be the new home for two printers, with the main goal of “promoting and expanding more sustainable manufacturing practices.” It may also accommodate larger printers in the future. “We’re learning from this to design the next one,” Dr. Dagg told ABC News.

As fallout from ransomware attack spirals out of control, changes to healthcare data being sold on the dark web

A severe ransomware attack against Change Healthcare in February delayed prescription orders across the United States and continues to have severe consequences.

Cybercriminal group RansomHub has released some of the millions of patient records it claims to have stolen in attacks on the dark web, including medical information, insurance records and billing details.

RansomHub claims that unless Change Healthcare pays the ransom, 4TB of stolen data will be sold to the highest bidder. The shipment is also said to contain contracts and legal agreements between Change Healthcare and its business partners.

To further complicate the situation, RansomHub is not the first cybercriminal group to claim responsibility for the devastating Change Healthcare hack.

The ransomware attack was initially attributed to the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV. In fact, BlackCat/ALPHV reportedly received the equivalent of $22 million in cryptocurrency payments in early March, which was widely believed to be a ransom.

If this is accurate, why does another cybercriminal group now appear to be demanding a ransom from Change Healthcare? Is this a single breach, or two different groups trying to extort money from the same theft?

The security breach may be linked to two different groups, as affiliates and members of the ransomware gang have feuded over how best to divide the proceeds.

RansomHub says wired It is not affiliated with the BlackCat/ALPHV group and declined to disclose the ransom amount demanded from Change Healthcare.

Regardless of who stole what, and how much ransom they might demand, selling the leaked information significantly increases the risk to patients and the industry as a whole.

Patients now find themselves at increased risk of identity theft and financial fraud, and may be subject to discrimination based on compromised medical information. At the same time, insurers are concerned there could be a significant increase in fraudulent claims, which in turn would increase costs for consumers.

None of this is good news, and raises an interesting question – how will Change Healthcare respond to the latest ransom demand?

Change Healthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, said the company continues to “make progress in mitigating the impact of February’s cyberattack.”

How to implement digital transformation strategy?

Andrea Marks, Vice President of Digital Transformation at Walmart

Andrea Marks, Vice President of Digital Transformation at Walmart

Andrea Marks joined Walmart in 2021 as vice president of digital transformation. In this role, Andrea is responsible for clinical data and analytics, interoperable care delivery technology, and health consumer digital experiences. She is also responsible for evaluating and developing strategic plans for gathering health and wellness data and technology resources to implement the broader Walmart health and wellness strategy and deliver results.

Andrea has 30 years of healthcare experience with a focus on clinical analysis and reporting. Prior to joining Walmart, she served as vice president of the Center of Excellence for People Analytics at United Health Group and spent eight years at OptumRx, where she served as senior vice president and chief analytics officer, responsible for analytics development, outcome modeling measurement and integrated accounts for the company’s PBM services. Report. Andrea has also served as Chief Information Officer for Blue Health Intelligence and held senior clinical analytics positions at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, CVS/Caremark, and the University of Chicago.

Below is our conversation with her.

As Vice President of Digital Transformation for Health and Wellness at Walmart, what are some of the key roles and responsibilities you perform at Walmart every day?

Digital transformation serves as the connective tissue across the entire Walmart Health & Wellness organization, helping us become more digital and scalable and supporting various lines of business including pharmacy, vision and omni-channel care. With this in mind, I continually prioritize our technology development roadmap and work to ensure we have the right team in place to deploy scalable solutions. I’m responsible for ensuring we have the right profile structure, our systems are interoperable, and our consumer digital experiences are built in the right way to ensure positive outcomes and engagement at scale. I am responsible for maintaining communication and connections between all of our business leaders by connecting people, building relationships and removing ambiguity from the roadmap.

What are the challenges for leaders looking to digitally transform their organizations, especially in retail healthcare?

One of the biggest challenges for leaders entering this space is balancing delivery of short-term needs with the long-term vision of fully integrated capabilities that drive value at scale. Moving away from paper-based processes or siled experiences is at the heart of any digital transformation journey. These journeys are long, and making the right decisions on the front end is critical to long-term success. There’s a constant balance between time and resources – deciding how much you want to invest, how quickly to build capabilities, and deciding which investments will help you scale. While you may be inclined to adopt a solution that meets your short-term needs, you must still focus on long-term scalability. There is always a balance between today and the future.

As for retail healthcare, we are in the early stages of approaching health issues from different angles. But Walmart goes all out! By leveraging the trust we have with consumers, we are using our digital transformation efforts to solidify their trust in the health and wellness services we deliver. Getting all digital transformation activities right from the start is critical to building trust and long-term loyalty.

Can you provide us with more details about the digital transformation project you are implementing at Walmart? How is your organization leveraging digital transformation to make strides in retail healthcare?

We have been focused on building new capabilities across omnichannel services, such as our health centers and virtual health, as well as modernizing our core pharmaceutical and vision businesses to deliver new innovative services that drive measurable growth in the market. the value of. This requires expansion and interoperability of core functionality while supporting flexibility to meet local market needs. Healthcare is local and our services need to meet the needs of consumers, whether they are physical or virtual assets. Creating omnichannel experiences has been our focus, while ensuring that all experiences are connected in the way consumers expect.

“By leveraging the trust we have with consumers, we are using our digital transformation efforts to solidify their trust in the health and wellness services we deliver.”

One of the most high-profile projects last year was working with our pharmacy operations team to develop technology for delivering COVID-19 immunizations and creating digital vaccine records, which impacts the health of millions of consumers. It’s amazing to see someone being able to quickly access their vaccine records from their phone through the Walmart app, rather than remembering to carry a non-digital paper record with them. Healthcare needs these digital advances, and I’m excited to see them expand. The solutions we provide are not just COVID-19 specific, but are designed to be scalable to meet the needs of other areas of the business. Again, meet today’s needs with an eye on the future.

What advice do you have for your colleagues and leaders?

At the core of digital transformation is a clear understanding of the experiences and outcomes you want to deliver. From here, work backwards to derive detailed data elements and structures. Data is a critical part of the equation and is often an afterthought. Make it front and center of your entire digital transformation strategy. I also encourage my colleagues to continue to think long-term. Once investments are made, they are difficult to reverse, so focus on making the right decisions around technology and operational processes, and ensuring the scalability of these solutions aligns with your overall strategy.

Finally, like anything in life, focus on building relationships and listening to your customers’ needs. A strong relationship will lead to deeper conversations and ensure you have the right understanding of your long-term goals to approach digital transformation in the right way.

Netflix true crime documentary may use AI-generated footage of real people

Netflix accused of using AI-processed images in true crime documentary what jennifer did, Futurism Reported. Several photos show classic signs of AI deception, including injured hands, strange artifacts, and more. If accurate, the report raises serious questions about the use of such images in documentaries, especially since those depicted are currently in prison awaiting retrial.

Documentary star Jennifer Penn’s left hand is badly damaged in one shocking photo, while another shows a strange chip on her cheek. Netflix has not acknowledged the report, but the images showed clear signs of manipulation and were never labeled as AI-generated.

FTC fines mental health startup Cerebral $7 million for major privacy violations

ReportApril 16, 2024Editorial DepartmentPrivacy Breach/Regulatory Compliance

Major privacy violation

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered psychological telemedicine company Cerebral not to use or disclose personal data for advertising purposes.

The company was also fined more than $7 million for disclosing users’ sensitive personal health information and other data to third parties for advertising purposes and for failing to comply with its easy cancellation policy.

“Cerebral and its former CEO, Kyle Robertson, repeatedly violated their privacy commitments to consumers and misled them about the company’s cancellation policies,” the FTC said in a press statement.

The FTC said that although the company claimed to provide “safe, secure and discreet” services to attract consumers to sign up and provide data, it did not clearly disclose that this information would be shared with third parties for advertising purposes.

The agency also accused the company of deceptive behavior by hiding its data-sharing practices in dense privacy policies by claiming it would not share user data without their consent.

Internet security

The company allegedly provided sensitive information about nearly 3.2 million consumers to third parties such as LinkedIn, Snapchat and TikTok by integrating tracking tools into its websites and apps designed to provide advertising and data analytics.

This information includes name; medical and prescription history; home and email addresses; phone numbers; date of birth; demographic information; IP addresses; pharmacy and health insurance information; and other health information.

The FTC complaint further alleges that Cerebral failed to implement adequate security safeguards, allowed former employees to access users’ medical records between May and December 2021, used unsecured access methods to expose patient information, and failed to secure access to consumer data. Restrict access to employees who require it.

“Cerebral mailed promotional postcards without envelopes to more than 6,000 patients that included their names and language and appeared to disclose their diagnoses and treatments to anyone who saw the postcards,” the FTC said.

Under the proposed order, which is pending federal court approval, the company is prohibited from using or disclosing consumers’ personal and health information to third parties for marketing purposes and ordered to implement a comprehensive privacy and data security program.

Cerebral is also required to post a notice on its website reminding users of the FTC order and adopt a data retention plan and delete most consumer data that is not used for treatment, payment or health care operations unless they consent. Users also need to be provided with a mechanism to delete their data.

Days ago, the Federal Trade Commission banned alcohol addiction treatment company Monument from disclosing health information to third-party platforms such as Google and Meta for advertising without user consent between 2020 and 2022, even though the company claimed that such data would be used for advertising “100 % Confidential”. “

The New York-based company has been ordered to notify users of disclosures of their health information to third parties and ensure that any shared data is deleted.

“Monument failed to ensure that it lived up to its promises and actually disclosed users’ health information to third-party advertising platforms, including highly sensitive data that showed its customers were receiving help to overcome their alcohol addiction,” the FTC said.

Last year, the FTC announced similar enforcement actions against health care providers such as BetterHelp, GoodRx and Premom for sharing user data with third-party analytics and social media companies without their consent.

it also warns [PDF] After Amazon eventually acquired membership-based primary care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion, it objected to the use of patient data for marketing purposes.

Hive RAT creator and mastermind of $3.5M cryptocurrency hijack arrested in global crackdown

Hacker arrested

Two people in Australia and the United States have been arrested for allegedly developing and distributing a remote access Trojan called Hive RAT (formerly known as Firebird).

The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) said the malware “enabled malware buyers to take control of victim computers and gave them access to victims’ private communications, login credentials, and other personal information.”

Edmond Chakhmakhchyan (aka “Corrupt”), a 24-year-old man from Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, was arrested for selling Hive RAT licenses to undercover employees of law enforcement agencies.

He was charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of advertising the device as an interception device, each count punishable by five years in prison. Chakhmakhchyan has pleaded not guilty and will stand trial on June 4, 2024.

Court documents allege that there was a partnership between the creators of the malware and the defendants, under which the latter would advertise the malware on cybercrime forums called Hack Forums and accept cryptocurrency payments from customers. , and provide product support.

Internet security

Hive RAT has the ability to kill programs, browse files, log keystrokes, access incoming and outgoing communications, and steal victim passwords for bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets and others from the victim’s computer without the victim’s knowledge or consent. The function of the certificate.

“Chakhmakhchyan exchanged electronic messages with buyers and explained to one buyer that the malware ‘allowed Hive RAT users to access other people’s computers without their knowledge,'” the DOJ said.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced charges against a citizen suspected of being involved in the manufacture and sale of Hive RAT, and said an investigation into the matter began in 2020.

The unnamed suspect faces 12 charges, including one count of providing data with intent to commit a computer crime, one count of controlling data with intent to commit a computer crime and 10 counts of providing data with intent to commit a computer crime. crime. The maximum penalty for each offense is three years’ imprisonment.

Sue Evans, AFP’s acting cybercrime commander, said: “Remote access Trojans are one of the most harmful cyber threats in the online environment. Once installed on a device, a RAT can provide criminals with complete access to the device. Access and control.”

“This could include anything from committing crimes anonymously to spying on victims through camera equipment, wiping hard drives or stealing banking credentials and other sensitive information.”

Nebraska man indicted in cryptojacking scheme

The development comes as U.S. federal prosecutors indicted 45-year-old Charles O. Parks III, also known as “CP3O,” for conducting a large-scale illegal cryptojacking operation that defrauded “two well-known cloud computing service providers” of more than $3.5 million in mining value. Nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency computing resources.

The indictment charges the Parkers with wire fraud, money laundering and engaging in illegal currency transactions. He was arrested on April 13, 2024. He also faces 10 years in prison for illegal currency transactions.

Internet security

While the DOJ did not specify which cloud providers were targeted by the fraud, it noted that the companies were based in Seattle and Redmond, Washington — the corporate headquarters of Amazon and Microsoft.

“From approximately January 2021 to August 2021, Parks created and used various names, corporate affiliations, and email addresses, including emails bearing the domain of the corporate entity he operated […] Registered a large number of accounts with a cloud provider and obtained large amounts of computing processing power and storage space for which he did not pay,” the U.S. Department of Justice said.

The illegally obtained resources are then used to mine cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and Monero (XMR), which are traded through a network of cryptocurrency exchanges, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) Marketplaces, online payment providers and traditional bank accounts are used to launder money and hide traces of digital transactions.

The ill-gotten gains were eventually converted into U.S. dollars, which Parks used to make a variety of lavish purchases, including Mercedes-Benz luxury cars, jewelry, first-class hotels and travel expenses, prosecutors said.

“Parks deceived providers into approving enhanced privileges and benefits, including increased cloud service levels and deferred billing accommodations, and deflected provider inquiries about questionable data usage and growing unpaid subscription balances,” the DOJ said.

Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve 19 launched with AI-powered motion tracking and color grading

Blackmagic Design has released its annual NAB 2024 update and announced more than a dozen new products, including new versions of its popular DaVinci Resolve editing suite. Other key products include the DaVinci Resolve micro color panel for iPad, 17K 65mm camera and Pyxis 6K cube camera.

da vinci determination 19

DaVinci Resolve has become a popular choice for editors who don’t want a monthly subscription to Adobe Premiere Pro, and is arguably more powerful in some ways. However, the latest version, version 19, takes a page from its competitors and offers a slew of new AI features for effects, color, editing, audio, and more.

DaVinci Resolve 19 “Color Slicing” Tool (Black Magic Design)

Starting with the Edit mod, a new feature lets you edit clips using text instead of video. Transcribing a clip opens a window showing the text detected from multiple speakers, allowing you to delete parts, search for text, and more. Other features include a new trim window, a fixed playhead (reducing zooming and scrolling), and a window for faster and more changes to audio properties.

The Color tool introduces “color slicing,” a way to adjust images based on six vectors (red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, and magenta) and a special skin tone slider. For example, you can adjust any specific color and easily change saturation and hue levels while viewing and adjusting underlying keys. A dedicated skin slider will certainly make it attractive for quick skin tone adjustments.

DaVinci Resolve 19 Intellitrack (Black Magic Design)

Another key feature in Color is IntelliTrack, powered by Neural Engine AI, which allows you to quickly select points to track to create effects or stabilize images. Blackmagic has also added a new Lightroom-like artificial intelligence noise reduction system that can quickly remove digital noise or film grain from images without the need for user adjustments.

“Film Look Creator” is a new module that opens up color grading possibilities with over 60 film parameters. It seems fairly easy to use, as you can start with a preset (Preset 65mm, Film, Bleach Bypass, Retro) and adjust the parameters to suit your taste. Another new trick is Defocused Background, which lets users realistically simulate shallow depth of field through mattes (unlike smartphones), while Face Refinement tracks faces so editors can adjust brightness, Colors, details, etc.

The Fusion FX editor has added some new tools to simplify the operation of 3D objects. In terms of audio (Fairlight), BMD has introduced “Dialogue Separator FX” to separate dialogue, background or atmosphere. DaVinci Resolve 19 is now available in open beta for everyone to try, but a full release date has not yet been revealed. As usual, the Studio version is priced at $295, while the main version is free.

BMD’s DaVinci Resolve for iPad has proven to be a popular choice for mobile editors, and now the company has introduced a dedicated control interface with a new Micro Color panel. It’ll give editors far more control than the already decent pencil and multi-touch input, while remaining relatively unobtrusive at 7.18 x 14.33 inches.

A slot on the top front allows you to slide your iPad in, and from there you can connect via Bluetooth or USB-C. The company promises a “professional” feel to its controls, which consist of three weighted trackballs, 12 control dials and 27 buttons. With these, you can perform edits, adjust parameters such as shadows, tones, and highlights, and even perform erasures and other effects.

“Older DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel models have been popular with customers who wanted a compact graded panel, but we wanted to design a more portable and affordable solution,” said Grant Petty, President of Blackmagic Design. Pre-orders are available now, priced at $509.

Box 6K camera

Blackmagic Design has launched a new box camera, the Pyxis 6K full-frame camera, following in the footsteps of rivals such as RED, Sony and Panasonic. The idea is to start with the basic brain (controls, display, CFexpress media, brain, and sensors) and then use side panels or mounting screws to attach accessories like controllers, microphones, and SSDs. It also comes with Blackmagic’s URSA Cine EVF (electronic viewfinder), which adds $1,695 to the price.

Its specs are very similar to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K I tested late last year. The full 36 x 24mm sensor has a native resolution of 24 million pixels (6K), a dynamic range of up to 13 stops, and a dual native ISO of up to 25,600. It can record 12-bit Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) directly to a CFexpress Type B card or SSD.

It also supports direct streaming to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, and more via RTMP and SRT over Ethernet or using a cellular connection. Because streaming is built into the camera, clients and customers can stream status and data rates directly in the viewfinder or LCD. The Pyxis 6K will be available in June for $2,995 and comes with three mounts (Canon EF, Leica L, and Arri PL).

In addition to the Pyxis, Blackmagic has launched two cinema cameras: the URSA Cine 12K and 17K models. Yes, those numbers represent the resolutions of both cameras, with the first offering a 36 x 24mm full-frame sensor at 12K (12,888 x 6,480 17:9) and a rather mind-boggling frame rate Confident 100 fps. The second uses a 65mm (50.8 x 23.3 sensor) with a resolution of 17,520 x 8,040 and offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range.

Both models are equipped with features such as built-in ND filters, optical low-pass filters, and BMD’s latest generation 5.0 color science. The URSA Cine 12K will come with 8TB of internal storage, or you can use your own CFexpress media. Other features include live streaming, high-resolution EVF, V battery support, wireless Bluetooth camera control, and more. The URSA Cine 12K model is available for pre-order at $14,995, or $16,495 with the URSA Cine EVF, and will be available in April. The URSA Cine 17K is in development and no pricing or release has been announced yet.

Cloud storage without climate costs

As of 2022, more than half of enterprise data will be stored in the cloud, and the demand for cloud storage has never been higher. This has triggered extreme energy consumption across the data center industry, resulting in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Worryingly, the European Commission currently estimates that EU data center energy use will increase from 2.7% of total EU demand to 3.2% by 2030. This would make the industry’s emissions almost as polluting as international aviation in the European Union.

Still, it’s important to remember that cloud storage is still more sustainable than other alternatives.

Why should we consider cloud storage sustainable?

It’s important to understand the energy used by cloud storage and consider the energy it can save elsewhere. With file storage and sharing services, teams can collaborate and work from anywhere, eliminating the need for large offices and daily commutes.

As a result, businesses can reduce their workspace and reduce the environmental impact of employee travel. In fact, it’s estimated that working from home four days a week can reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions by about 10%.

In addition, cloud storage reduces dependence on physical local servers. For small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), owning on-site servers or their own data center can be very expensive, while operating and cooling the equipment requires a lot of energy, which means more CO22 emission.

On the other hand, cloud servers offer a more efficient alternative. Unlike a local server, which may only use a fraction of its capacity, a cloud server in a data center can be used more efficiently. Because virtualization technology allows a single physical server to act as multiple virtual servers, they typically run at higher capacities.

Each virtual server can be used by different businesses, meaning fewer physical units are needed overall. This means less energy is required for power and cooling, reducing overall emissions.

Additionally, local servers often have more storage and computing power than is needed to handle occasional spikes in demand, which is an inefficient use of resources. In contrast, cloud data centers aggregate large numbers of devices to manage these peaks more efficiently.

In 2022, the average power consumption efficiency of data centers will increase. This shows that cloud providers are using energy more efficiently and helping companies reduce their carbon footprint through cloud storage.

Sustainable Transformation: Three Steps to Create Green Cloud Storage

Importantly, there are ways to further improve the sustainability of services such as cloud storage, and energy savings of 30-50% can be achieved through green strategies. So, how does ordinary cloud storage transform into green cloud storage? We believe there are three basic steps.

First, businesses should carefully consider location. This means choosing a cloud storage provider that is close to power facilities. This is because distance matters. If electricity travels a long distance between generation and use, some of it is lost. In addition, data centers located in cooler climates or underwater environments can reduce the energy required for cooling.

Next, companies should ask green suppliers what steps they are taking to reduce their environmental impact. For example, using wind, solar or biofuels to power their operations minimizes reliance on fossil fuels and thereby reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Some facilities will be equipped with large battery banks to store renewable energy and ensure a continuous, environmentally friendly supply of electricity.

Last but not least, technology offers powerful ways to enhance the energy efficiency of cloud storage. Some vendors have been investing in algorithms, software and hardware designed to optimize energy use. For example, introducing frequency scaling or artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms can significantly improve the way data centers manage power consumption and cooling.

For example, Google used DeepMind AI to reduce its data center cooling costs by 40%, a prime example of how smart systems can achieve greater sustainability.

As the world warms accelerating, choosing a cloud storage provider with a clear commitment to sustainability can make a big difference. In fact, major cloud providers such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon have taken steps to make their cloud services more environmentally friendly, such as committing to switching to 100% renewable energy.

Cloud storage without climate costs

The impact of the cloud on businesses is undeniable, but our digital growth could lead to an unsustainable future with serious environmental consequences. However, companies should not have to choose between innovation and the planet.

The answer lies in green cloud storage. By using providers powered by renewable energy, efficient data centers and innovative technologies, businesses can reap the benefits of the cloud without incurring devastating energy taxes.

Now is the time to take action. The onus is on businesses to choose green cloud storage and become part of the solution, not part of the problem. By making the shift today, we can ensure that the cloud remains a convenient refuge rather than a culprit in climate change.
