According to reports, if you’re in North America, Tesla staff will show you how the automaker’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology works before you can take your car home. Bloomberg.Tesla CEO Musk reportedly issued a memo requiring Tesla stores in the region to install and activate its latest fully self-driving software and then Let customers take a short test drive before delivering the vehicle. He added that “few people really realize how well (supervised) FSD actually works” and that he made demonstrations a “hard requirement” even though he knew it would slow down delivery.
To enjoy Tesla’s FSD technology, you’ll have to pay $12,000 to unlock it, on top of the cost of purchasing the car itself. It comes with all of the company’s Autopilot features, as well as the ability to use Autopilot on city streets and activate the vehicle to recognize stop signs and traffic lights to automatically slow to a stop when approaching. Still, $12,000 is a lot of money. If you’re on the fence about spending that kind of money, Tesla is probably hoping this demo will give you the push necessary to say yes.
Tesla has faced criticism and formal investigations over the years for its Autopilot and FSD technologies. In 2022, the California DMV filed a complaint against the company, alleging that the company used advertising language to make its vehicles appear to be capable of fully autonomous driving, without the need for human driver supervision.
