This week, Tucker Carlson an interview X with Vladimir Putin. The interview, which lasted more than two hours, was ostensibly an attempt to interview the Russian leader about the war in Ukraine. Instead of doing that, however, Putin went into a lengthy digression about his own views on Russian history before attacking Carlson in his face.
What I’m trying to say is this: This interview was hands down the funniest thing I’ve seen all year. Granted, we’re only six weeks away from the start of 2024, but Carlson’s awkward, bizarre conversation with the Russian dictator had me laughing so hard several times.
There are many levels of humor. For one thing, Carlson was forced to fly to the Kremlin for this interview. This background is interesting in its own right. Tucker was summoned to the palace of his interview subjects, I’m sure, in hopes of having an informative and exciting discussion that would be a perfect fit for his alt/right-wing/infotainment style web content. Instead, he gets a hilariously boring history lesson about national borders and constant insults. The look of bewilderment and bewilderment on Carlson’s face as Putin rambles on is truly worth savoring:
That said, Tucker did his best to get something commercially viable out of his chat. However, Putin has scuppered these attempts almost every time, choosing instead to mock Carlson and make him look like an idiot.
One of the more memorable examples was Putin telling Carlson in so many words that he was obviously too stupid to get a job at the CIA (Carlson Irony is trying to do Before becoming an anti-deep state shill):
At another point, Carlson asked Putin if he saw God’s design for world political affairs. With a bored look on his face that seemed to suggest he was talking to someone with a below-average IQ, Putin simply said “no” and then explained that international law, not God, governs world events.
Obviously, you can say a lot of things about Vladimir Putin, but him not being smart is not one of them. For much of the Carlson interview, Putin behaved more or less like a man trying to explain algebra to a goat.

It’s commendable that Carlson wanted to interview an influential world leader currently embroiled in a brutal war, although it’s hard not to feel that Carlson’s content is always beholden to a broader ideological narrative aimed at Angering the audience without giving them much context. I was hoping to see a great interview with Putin, even though that wasn’t the case. But it made me laugh.
