Stability AI tries to stay ahead of the curve with new image-generating AI model

Stability AI’s latest image generation model is Stable Cascade, which promises to be faster and more powerful than its industry-leading predecessor, Stable Diffusion, which is the basis for many other text-to-image generation AI tools.

Stable Cascade can generate photos and provide variations of the exact image it created, or attempt to increase the resolution of an existing image. Other text-to-image editing features include Heal and Heal (the model will fill only specific parts of the edited image) and Smart Edges (users can make new photos using only the edges of an existing picture).

The new model is available on GitHub for researchers but not for commercial use, opening up more options even as companies like Google and even Apple release their own image generation models.

Unlike Stability’s flagship stable diffusion model, Stability Cascade is not one large language model – it is three different models that rely on the Würstchen architecture. The first phase, Phase C, compresses textual prompts into latent (or smaller) code fragment) and then passed to stages A and B to decode the request.

Breaking the request into smaller bits compresses the request, requiring less memory (and less time training on those hard-to-find GPUs) and running faster. At the same time, it performs better “in terms of quick alignment and aesthetic quality.” Building the image takes approximately 10 seconds, compared with 22 seconds for the currently used SDXL model.

Stability AI helped popularize the stable diffusion method and has also been the subject of multiple lawsuits alleging that Stable Diffusion used copyrighted data for training without the permission of the rights holder – Getty Images in the UK The lawsuit against Stability AI is scheduled to go to trial in December. In December, the company began offering commercial licenses via subscription, which it said was necessary to fund its research.
