Global innovator LG Electronics has opened its first factory in the United States to assemble electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The new electric vehicle charger production facility in Fort Worth, Texas, will create new jobs and support the growth of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the United States.
To mark LG’s entry into the U.S. electric vehicle charger market, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker and other officials cut the ribbon on the new facility, along with LG Electronics senior executives Alec Jang, president of LG Electronics Business Solutions; HK Suh, global head of LG’s electric vehicle charger business; and Nicolas Min, president of LG Business Solutions USA.

The first products to be assembled in Fort Worth starting in January will be Level 2 AC chargers with load management solutions and variable current settings to achieve 11kW of output power via a standard SAE J1772 connector. The Level 2 AC charger is designed for simple wall mounting and comes with an optional stand so it can be placed anywhere.
The EVW011SK-SN model has passed UL2594 (UL Solutions electric vehicle power supply equipment standard) and Energy Star (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s trustworthy energy and performance standard) certification.
Starting in spring, the factory will assemble LG’s first Level 3 DC charger, a vertical model with a connected power bank that provides up to 175kW of fast charging via CCS1 and NACS connectors. Level 3 models will feature large outdoor LCD touch screen displays that offer a variety of features for different owners and use cases, including generating additional revenue through advertising sales. In addition, 350kW ultra-fast chargers are also on the roadmap for later in 2024.

The joint CoE will focus on developing embedded generative AI solutions for clients using the IBM watsonx AI and data platform and watsonx AI Assistant. The CoE combines NTT DATA Business Solutions’ industry expertise with IBM technology to help NTT DATA Business Solutions clients scale and accelerate the impact of generative AI.

The Playdate came out two years ago, and at the time it was still small, yellow, with a black-and-white screen and a delightful crank on the side. I’ve had a consistent issue with the Playdate, and when I first reviewed it in 2022, I didn’t think it would be a big issue. Its display’s lack of backlight is noticeable and even annoying at times, especially in low-light spaces. I often found myself tilting the screen toward a nearby window or light, and the device was nearly unplayable on a dark plane or bus, or after sunset when there was no light source. If you remember playing the original game console in the backseat of your parents’ car at night, waiting for the streetlights to flicker past the window at regular intervals, it’s a lot like this. There’s a hint of nostalgia here, but mostly it’s just a little depressing.
Perhaps the biggest issue with the Playdate, however, is the stereo dock. Panic launched the Stereo Dock in mid-2021 – a truly adorable charging dock, Bluetooth speaker and pen holder that matches the Playdate’s pleasant yellow hue. I’ve been wanting to put one on my desk since it was announced, but the stereo dock has been “coming soon” for two years.
Playdate project lead Greg Maletic told Engadget that it is indeed coming.
“We apologize to anyone who was patiently waiting for the stereo dock’s Playdate; this was a trickier project than we expected and we had a few false starts,” Maletic said. “We thought we could save some money on the project. Time has allowed our fab to develop software for the Stereo Dock, but we’ve learned that in some cases you don’t always need that. By paring back graphics and adding new input methods, Playdate changed the way we think about playing and making games. With many of the industry’s most influential studios caught in a cycle of mass layoffs and regular retrenchments, now is the perfect time to rethink what we actually do here. Playdate makes this process natural, convenient and fun.

Devices like the Playdate don’t appear out of nowhere. I wouldn’t worry about revisiting it two years after release if it was too weak, overly complicated, or unserious, but it’s not a fun press release stunt from a company. The elegance, care, and proper prioritization built into Playdate make it a blank canvas for many different styles of game development. Playdate is a little yellow inspiration machine; it’s the physical reset button for the entire industry. In fact, I’m guessing it’s a reset crank.
Why choose between a gaming laptop and a school laptop when you can get a computer that does both?Gaming laptops are now cheaper and It’s stronger than ever, and many won’t look out of place in the classroom. If you plan on doing some serious multimedia work alongside your online video games, it’s worth considering a dedicated gaming system. You can find general advice on choosing a gaming laptop in our guide. But if you want some models suitable for school and play, you’ve come to the right place.
Are gaming laptops suitable for school?
As we mentioned, gaming laptops are especially useful if you are doing any demanding job. One of their big promises is strong graphics performance, and that’s not just limited to gaming. Video editing and 3D rendering programs can also take advantage of the GPU to handle heavy tasks. While you can find decent GPUs on some productivity machines, like Dell’s XPS 15, you can sometimes find better deals on gaming laptops. My general advice for any new workhorse: get at least 16GB of RAM and the largest SSD you can find (preferably 1TB or more). These components are often difficult to upgrade, making them worth the upfront investment.
One of the big drawbacks of choosing a gaming laptop is portability. In most cases, we recommend the 15-inch model for the best balance of size and price. They typically weigh around 4.5 pounds, which is significantly heavier than an ultraportable laptop that weighs 3 pounds. Still, today’s gaming laptops are much lighter than older models, so at least you’re not lugging a 10-pound brick around. If you’re looking for something lighter, there are plenty of 14-inch options now. If you’re not a fan of LED lights and other gamer-centric bells and whistles, keep an eye out for more low-profile models (or make sure you know how to turn those lights off).

The Asus ROG Zephryus G14 may be a little more expensive than when it first launched, but it’s still a great 14-inch laptop for all purposes. What’s great about the latest model is that it features a new unibody aluminum chassis, a vibrant 120Hz OLED display, solid performance, and a ton of ports, all for hundreds of dollars less than the comparable Razer Blade 14. It even has a built-in microSD card reader and multiple color gamut presets, so it can easily do double duty as a photo/video editing machine. Its audio is also well above average, thanks to powerful upward-firing stereo speakers. Battery life is also great, with the Zepyrus lasting just eight hours on our run-down test. Best of all, the G14 weighs nearly half a pound less than competing laptops with similar designs. The main drawbacks are that its GPU is capped at an RTX 4070 (rather than 4080 like the previous model), and its RAM is soldered into it. Over the years, Razer has built a reputation for producing gaming laptops that look as good as a MacBook. This is still true. The Razer Blade 15 has a sleek yet sturdy metal exterior, a low-profile design (unless you actually turn on those RGB keyboard lights), and pretty much all the features you’d want in a portable gaming powerhouse. If money is no object, you can equip the Blade 15 with Intel’s latest 13th-generation processors, NVIDIA’s powerful RTX 4070, and a 1,440p OLED display running at 240 Hz.
While you’ll pay more for the Blade 15 than some other models, you still have some options at different price points. The entry-level model starts at $1,999 and comes with an RTX 3070 GPU and a 360Hz 1080p display. This is certainly enough for most games and creative applications. If you’re looking for something smaller, Razer’s new AMD-powered Blade 14 also looks attractive. Razer also recently launched new Blade 16 and 18 models, which cost (and weigh!) much more than the Blade 15, but may be useful if you need a larger screen.

While Alienware has established itself as a reliable high-end brand, Dell’s cheaper G-series laptops are worth considering for anyone on a budget. In particular, the G15 continues the trend of delivering powerful hardware for less than $1,000, including Intel’s latest 13th generation CPUs and NVIDIA’s RTX 30 and 40 series GPUs. Sure, the casing is mostly plastic, and the screen doesn’t offer all the latest details, but for the price, it’s hard to find anything more powerful.

The Apple Watch has long topped our list of the best smartwatches, and the Series 9 (launching in September 2023) is a significant update from its predecessor. It runs on the new S9 SiP, which is the most meaningful upgrade to a wearable processor in years. While we didn’t notice a huge jump in overall performance—the Watch has long been fast and responsive—the SiP update does allow for faster Siri responses and support for offline Siri interactions.
The latest model also supports a new double-tap gesture based on Assistive Touch. This allows you to navigate the watch’s interface without actually touching the screen, doing things like turning off a timer or using finger gestures to start workout tracking. You can only use Double Click in certain instances in watchOS 10, but this feature makes these actions easier and more accessible.
In addition, the Series 9 is equipped with a second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip that works with the new Find My iPhone interface, and its screen is brighter than previous versions. All of these things combine to make Series 9 feel like the biggest update to the Watch in years. Still, the caveats remain the same as they have been for a while: You can only use the Apple Watch if you’re an iPhone user, and it lags behind the competition when it comes to sleep tracking. Battery life affects the latter, but you’ll still get a full day of use before needing an overnight charge.
