Elon Musk’s $56 billion Tesla compensation plan rejected by court

In 2018, Tesla paid Musk a salary of US$56 billion, helping him rise to the top of the world’s richest list. Now, a Delaware judge has invalidated the deal between the company and the CEO, calling the compensation amount “unfathomably high” and unfair to shareholders. As originally seen and reported by Chancery Daily on Threads, the Delaware Court of Chancery has issued its ruling in a lawsuit filed by Richard Tornetta. Tesla shareholders have accused the automaker of breaching its fiduciary duty by approving a plan that unfairly enriched its chief executive.

Judge Katherine McCormick wrote in her decision that Musk’s “close relationship” with the director responsible for negotiating its compensation package on Tesla’s behalf meant “there was no meaningful negotiation on any terms of the plan.” . The judge also talked about how Musk owned 21.9% of the automaker at the time the plan was negotiated. This gives him “full motivation to drive Tesla to transformative levels of growth,” as he can gain $10 billion for every $50 billion in market capitalization.

“Swayed by the ‘all is well’ rhetoric, or perhaps beguiled by Musk’s superstar appeal, the board never asked the $55.8 billion question: whether it was necessary for Tesla to preserve the plan and achieve its goals ?” the judge wrote in court documents.as Washington post Pointing out, she ruled that Tornetta had the right to “rescind” and ordered Tesla and its shareholders to implement her decision and reverse the transaction. However, Musk’s camp can still appeal her ruling.

From the day his compensation package was approved, Musk sold some Tesla stock to help pay for his acquisition of Twitter (now X).He currently owns about 13% of Tesla, although he recently explain He wants to gain 25% control of the company before he feels comfortable growing the company into a leader in artificial intelligence and robotics.

In response to the court ruling, Musk Tweet: “Never register your company in Delaware.” He also posted a poll Followers were asked whether Tesla should change its domicile in Texas, where its physical headquarters is located.

They claim that countless people are tired of Facebook’s endless scandals, and this time they are finally going to stop using Facebook. Some did, but Facebook’s user base continued to grow years later. Now, Amazon is experiencing a similar performance phenomenon. As calls to cancel Amazon Prime grow louder Complaints about advertising and monopolyNew data shows Jeff Bezos’ money-making machine is still expanding.

This time last year, when analytics firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) announced: Amazon Prime U.S. membership has stopped growing first. But CIRP is back, and according to its latest estimates, the decline is over. CIRP said Amazon will have 8 million more Prime subscribers by 2023.In fact, its Report Shows that a higher percentage of U.S. Amazon users are paying for Prime than ever before.

The litany of grievances has prompted a growing number of people to vow to end their relationship with Amazon, from individual consumers on social media to writer and reporter The entire web. on Monday, Amazon officially launches ads on Amazon Prime Video, much to the chagrin of the audience. The streaming service is free with a Prime subscription and has been promoted as an ad-free experience in the past. Now, if you don’t want to take advantage of the Colgate sale between episodes, you’ll have to pay an additional $3 on top of the $139 you already paid for Prime. Rachel. “We see Prime membership growth slowing and speculate that it has reached its theoretical limit,” CIRP said in its report. “Amazon Prime membership numbers have been fairly flat from December 2021 to December 2022, but over the past year Growth picked up again mid-year, at least a little bit.”

CIRP estimates that the number of paying Prime members in the United States will increase to 176 million by 2023, a 5% increase from Amazon’s 168 million the previous year. 8 Advertising Pitfalls Car Dealers Should Avoid

To encourage truthfulness in automotive advertising, the Federal Trade Commission announced Operation Turnaround—a coast-to-coast enforcement effort focused on combating deceptive television, newspaper and online claims about sales, financing and leasing. . If you have clients in the automotive industry, the lessons learned from Moving to Clear Action can help them stay on the right track.

Asheville Paramount Kia Advertisement - We Agree! every day! 2013 Kia Sportage down $0. $99/monthThe companies named in the 10 lawsuits include four California dealerships: Casino Auto Sales in La Puente, Rainbow Auto Sales in South Gate, Honda of Hollywood in Los Angeles and Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos. Also the subject of the enforcement action were Fowlerville Ford of Fowlerville, Miss.; South Atlanta Nissan Motor Co. of Morrow, Ga.; Infiniti of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; and Pie in Hickory, N.C. Ramon KIA. Additionally, the FTC has taken action against Texas-based Southwest Kia companies, including New World Auto Imports of Dallas, New World Auto Imports of Rockwall and Hampton of Mesquite Two car companies. A lawsuit against Courtesy Auto Group in Attleboro, Mass., is headed to an administrative law judge.

You’ll need to review the complaints to see the allegations in each specific case, but busy dealers can supplement their “to do” lists with these “don’ts” related to advertising in one or more of the following Cases challenged by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as illegal:

Deceptive pricing. Some dealers advertise vehicles at specific low prices to attract potential buyers. But the actual price is $5,000 higher. (The complaint noted that some of the ads used a mix of English and Spanish.)

Deceptive advance payments. In some cases, dealers will advertise compelling low monthly payments. What they didn’t explain upfront was that these were temporary preview payments that would soon increase. The FTC said the dealer failed to account for the number of payments and how much they would amount to after the first few low monthly payments.

Undisclosed large payments. Another dealer advertised lower monthly payments without explicitly disclosing that the buyer would owe a large final payment. What’s more, the FTC said the dealer didn’t disclose the amount of the balloons — in this case, more than $10,000.

False $0 prepaid lease claim. Some companies advertise that consumers can lease cars without paying anything upfront. The Federal Trade Commission says that’s not the case. In fact, these goose eggs lurk high fees and other upfront amounts.

Undisclosed lease terms. The FTC said some companies advertised low down payments and low monthly payments without clearly explaining that the deal was actually a lease and involved numerous hidden fees.

Hidden rates. In one case, the FTC accused a dealer of claiming to offer 0% interest rate for 60 months. But it turns out that tax rate only applies when people buy a new car for a certain amount, such as $12,000. For example, if a consumer’s dream car costs $18,000, the buyer will have to pay a higher price that is not clearly stated.

False prize promotions. One dealer used the mail to drive people to their door, falsely claiming the consumer had won a raffle prize.

Credit and lease violations. In numerous cases, the FTC has accused companies of violating the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), Regulation Z, the Consumer Lease Act, and Regulation M—long-standing laws that any dealer should be familiar with. One common thread: a failure to disclose key credit or lease-related terms in the ad.

Hollywood Honda Advertisement - 0 Down Payment. 0 down. 0 deposit. Expires 0 on signing. The annual interest rate is 0.9%.To resolve the FTC lawsuit, the companies signed proposed orders that would change the way they do business going forward. Notable provisions of these legally binding settlements include a prohibition on advertising that misrepresents the cost of purchasing, leasing or financing a vehicle and a prohibition on other deceptive statements regarding pricing, sales, leasing or financing. The order forces the dealer to comply with TILA and the Consumer Leasing Act, as charged in the complaint. Also prohibited: False claims about sweepstakes, prizes, or other incentives.

The FTC will accept comments on the proposed settlement until the February 10, 2014 deadline.

AI-generated George Carlin comedy special was written by humans

As generative AI (and the use of AI tools) continues to grow, expect to see more “George Carlin: I’m glad I’m dead” riots. The show, posted on YouTube (and later taken down), was billed as an hour of new “material” by the comedian, who died in 2008. Of course, this is not the case. Nor is it based on old notes or lost routines, like the Beatles’ recent release, for which George Carlin’s estate has filed a lawsuit against the makers.

Preliminary reports from NPR Said the artificial intelligence was trained on thousands of hours of Carlin routines to create the material.Dudesy, the channel that created and posted the video, later contacted New York Timestheir spokesperson said the video was “entirely written by Chad Kultgen, one of the channel’s hosts.”

Both hosts, comedian Will Sasso and author Kurt Gen, appear in the lawsuit. They claim that the artificial intelligence created Carlin to resemble an impressionist painter. (Although, this is indeed not a good thing…)

The complaint seeks unspecified damages and the immediate removal of “any video or audio copies” of the special.

Arc’s new iPhone browser wants to be your search companion

The browser company launched Arc’s first iPhone companion app last year, allowing users to save links for later use on the desktop app. The company has now released a new mobile app called Arc Search, designed to focus on the search experience.

The app’s artificial intelligence feature, Browse for Me, returns a carefully crafted web page containing information about the search query. The feature, powered by models from OpenAI and other companies, reads at least six web pages and builds a new page with different sections.

For example, when I searched for “how to make perfect poached eggs,” Arc Search created a page for me with sections for “Ingredients and Tools,” “Poached Egg Techniques,” “Cooking Process,” and other tips. This page also has lots of useful photos and videos.

When I asked “What changes has Apple made to the App Store in response to DMA?” the browser also gave me a concise summary. While it doesn’t convey all the key points, the page contains the core of the announcement from the Cupertino-based tech giant.

These pages are great for me to get information at a glance, and I can also use the “Drill Down” section to explore other links listed for the topic. However, I currently cannot share these pages with anyone unless I take a screenshot.

Other features

If users don’t want to use AI features, they can just click on a query to use Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Ecosia—whichever you set as the default.

It’s worth noting that last week the browser company announced that users can set Preplexity as the default search engine on the Arc desktop client. It’s unclear whether this option will be available for mobile clients.

All web pages also have a reader mode for easy reading, and you can also bookmark web pages. But there is no folder system to store these bookmarks.

The Arc Search browser also archives tabs after 1 day (this is customizable) to prevent tab overload. You can view your open tabs via the tab switcher on the bottom bar, or by swiping and holding from the left edge of the screen.

Arc Mobile will automatically archive tabs

Additionally, Arc Search automatically blocks GDPR and newsletter pop-ups, ads, and trackers. Unlike the first companion browser, you can set it as the default browser on your iPhone.

Why does Arc build the browser this way?

Josh Miller, CEO of The Browser Company, said in a post on So it starts with the search bar in the middle. It opens a keyboard so you can start typing your query immediately.

With its new page creation feature Search, the new Arc Search browser wants to make you feel like you’re interacting with an AI agent that will do the heavy lifting of finding content, summarizing it, and presenting it well. We’ve seen this approach with Google’s Search Generated Experience (SGE) or Perplexity AI. Browsers, on the other hand, mainly introduce AI-driven features to summarize pages or help you write posts. Arc Search is trying to merge these two feature surfaces.

What’s next?

For now, Arc will retain its mobile companion for saving links, but there are plans to merge the two browser clients at a later stage.

What’s more, the company says it plans to roll out cross-browser syncing. Miller said in his post that as the company begins to ramp up the rollout of Windows clients, it can’t rely solely on iCloud. That’s why the team is building Arc’s own sync experience, which will be available soon.

Arc originally offered a waitlist system for Mac and last year abandoned the system for anyone to download. Its Windows client is still in the testing phase and still uses a waitlist system. With this new Arc Search client, the company hopes to provide a low-barrier entry point for users to start browsing immediately without having to create an account.

Malicious PyPI package transfers WhiteSnake InfoStealer malware to Windows computers

ReportJanuary 29, 2024Editorial DepartmentPyPI repository/malware

Malicious PyPI package

Cybersecurity researchers have discovered malicious packages in the open-source Python Package Index (PyPI) repository that deliver a type of malware called “Information Stealer.” white snake thief on Windows systems.

The malware-containing packages are named nigpal, figflix, telerer, seGMM, fbdebug, sGMM, myGens, NewGends, and TestLibs111. They were uploaded by a threat actor known as “WS”.

“These packages incorporate Base64-encoded PE source code or other Python scripts in their setup.py files,” Fortinet FortiGuard Labs said in an analysis published last week.

“Depending on the victim device’s operating system, the final malicious payload is dropped and executed when these Python packages are installed.”

Internet security

While Windows systems were infected with WhiteSnake Stealer, infected Linux hosts received Python scripts designed to gather information. The campaign, which targets Windows users, overlaps with previous campaigns disclosed by JFrog and Checkmarx last year.

“The Windows-specific payload was identified as […] The WhiteSnake malware has an Anti-VM mechanism, uses the Tor protocol to communicate with the C&C server, and can steal the victim’s information and execute commands,” JFrog pointed out in April 2023.

It is also designed to extract data from web browsers, cryptocurrency wallets and applications such as WinSCP, CoreFTP, Windscribe, Filezilla, AzireVPN, Snowflake, Steam, Discord, Signal and Telegram.

Checkmarx is tracking the threat actors behind a campaign dubbed PYTA31 and says the ultimate goal is to steal sensitive data from target computers, specifically encrypted wallet data.

It has also been observed that some newly released rogue software packages contain Clipper functionality, which can overwrite the clipboard contents with a wallet address owned by the attacker to perform unauthorized transactions. Others have been configured to steal data from browsers, applications and encrypted services.

Internet security

Fortinet said the discovery “demonstrates the ability of a single malware author to spread a large number of information-stealing malware packages into the PyPI repository over time, each with a different complex payload.”

The revelation comes as ReversingLabs discovered that two malicious packages in the npm package registry leveraged GitHub to store Base64-encrypted SSH keys stolen from the systems of the developers who installed them.

Google’s Lumiere makes artificial intelligence videos closer to reality than fantasy

Google’s new movie-generating AI model, Lumiere, uses a new diffusion model called Space-Time-U-Net, or STUNet, which can figure out where things are in a movie (space) and how they move and change simultaneously ( time). technical art This method reportedly allows Lumiere to create videos in one process, rather than putting smaller still frames together.

Lumiere starts by building the basic framework according to the prompts. It then uses the STUNet framework to start approximating where objects within that frame will move to create more frames that flow into each other, creating the appearance of seamless motion. Lumiere also produced 80 frames, while Stable Video Diffusion only produced 25 frames.

Granted, I’m more of a text journalist than a video journalist, but the fascinating reels released by Google, as well as the preprint scientific papers, show how AI-powered video generation and editing tools have gone from the uncanny valley in just a few years. A nearly realistic tool. Year. It also established Google’s technology in a space already occupied by competitors such as Runway, Stable Video Diffusion or Meta’s Emu. Runway, one of the first mass-market text-to-video platforms, launched Runway Gen-2 last March and began offering more realistic videos. Track films also struggle to depict movement.

Google kindly placed the clips and tips on the Lumiere website, which allowed me to place the same tips through Runway for comparison. The result is as follows:

Yes, some of the footage presented feels a bit contrived, especially if you look closely at the skin textures or the more atmospheric scenes. But look at that turtle! It moves like a turtle in water! It looks just like a real turtle! I sent the Lumiere introductory video to a friend who is a professional video editor. While she noted that “you could clearly tell it wasn’t entirely real,” she thought it was impressive that if I hadn’t told her it was artificial intelligence, she would have thought it was CGI. (She also said: “It’s going to take away my job, isn’t it?”)

While other models stitch together videos from generated keyframes of motion that has occurred (think of pictures in a flip book), STUNet lets Lumiere focus on the motion itself based on where the generated content should appear at a given time in the video.

Google isn’t a big player in text-to-video, but it has slowly released more advanced AI models and is leaning toward more modal focus. Its Gemini large language model will eventually bring image generation to Bard. Lumiere is not yet available for testing, but it shows Google’s ability to develop an AI video platform that is comparable to, or even slightly better than, commonly used AI video generators such as Runway and Pika. As a reminder, this is where Google was heading in the AI video space two years ago.

Google Imagen clips in 2022
Image: Google

In addition to text-to-movie generation, Lumiere will also allow image-to-movie generation, stylized generation (allowing users to create movies in a specific style), movie images that animate only part of a movie, and inpainting to mask an area Change the color or pattern of your video.

However, Google’s Lumiere paper notes that “leveraging our technology to create false or harmful content carries risks of abuse, and we believe it is critical to develop and apply tools for detecting bias and malicious use cases to ensure safe and fair use.” The paper’s The author does not explain how to achieve this.

Third Circuit Rules in FTC v. Wyndham

FTC watchers and data security experts, this is the decision you’ve been waiting for.The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit issues a ruling in favor of the Commission Federal Trade Commission v. Wyndham Worldwide, Inc..

The Federal Trade Commission sued the hotel company and three subsidiaries, alleging data security failures led to three data breaches at Wyndham properties in less than two years. The complaints allege that these failures resulted in millions of dollars in fraudulent charges being charged to consumers’ credit and debit cards and that the account information of hundreds of thousands of consumers was transferred to websites registered in Russia.

In 2014, a federal district court in New Jersey denied Wyndham’s motion to dismiss the FTC lawsuit. The Third Circuit agreed to immediately hear the appeal on two issues: “whether the FTC has authority to regulate cybersecurity under unfair terms in Section 45(a); and, if so, whether Wyndham had sufficient notice of its particular network Road safety practices may not comply with this provision.”

If your customers are concerned about data security (and they should be), you will want to read the full opinion. But in summary, the Third Circuit upheld the district court’s ruling that the FTC can use the unfair conduct prohibition in Section 5 of the FTC Act to challenge the alleged data security breaches outlined in the complaint. The court also rejected Wyndham’s fair notice argument.

Of course, the case is still pending in the district court, but the Third Circuit’s decision affirms important principles about how the FTC Act applies in the data security arena.

The decision is a must-read for business executives and lawyers.

Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal has resigned from the e-commerce group’s board of directors, two people said on Saturday. The Bengaluru-based startup’s other co-founder, Sachin Bansal, left the board in 2018 after a dispute with investors.

Binny Bansal retains the right to serve on Flipkart’s board for as long as he chooses, citing a conflict of interest with his new venture as the reason for the move. Bansal launched cross-border e-commerce startup OppDoor late last year. According to its website, OppDoor provides end-to-end solutions to businesses, including market entry analysis, demand mapping, inventory management, cross-border logistics and tax assistance.

Prior to this, Bansal sold its entire stake in Flipkart, which was acquired by Walmart for $16 billion in 2018. The e-commerce group has been highly anticipated in recent years and is expected to conduct an IPO in 2025. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of PhonePe and has become a prolific investor in recent years, backing many startups including PhonePe.

“I am proud of what the Flipkart Group has achieved over the past 16 years. Flipkart is in a strong position, with a strong leadership team and a clear path forward, and it is with this confidence that I have decided to resign, knowing that the company is in capable hands. in hand,” Bansal said in a statement.

After leaving Flipkart, Sachin Bansal founded Navi, a financial services company seeking to go public. In 2022, Navi filed documents for an initial public offering but blocked the plan after market conditions deteriorated.

“Flipkart is the result of a great idea and a lot of hard work, built by a team dedicated to changing the way India shops,” Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said in a statement on Saturday. “We wish Binney the best in its future success.” All the best as you embark on your next venture and thank him for the profound impact he will have on the Indian retail ecosystem.”

Crackdown on Entrepreneurs | Federal Trade Commission

Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force logoThe Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force Consumer Protection Task Force’s crackdown also includes 38 criminal actions by the Department of Justice, 15 cease and desist orders by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and an additional 20 by state attorneys general in Arizona, California and Colorado. Action, Indiana and Ohio.

The FTC’s actions illustrate a number of questionable business opportunities: mystery shopping services, credit card processing operations, websites purporting to be associated with high-end brands, promoters promising Postal Service jobs, business activities related to mortgage insurance premium refunds , rewards and credit card application processing, and an operation that claims to match companies with excess inventory with businesses looking to buy. But according to the FTC, they all have one thing in common: They all use deceptive tactics to peddle their bizopps.

The new cases coincide with related FTC actions, including a $478 million judgment against John Beck Amazing Profits in August 2012, as well as lawsuits against Infusion Media Inc., AED Inc. and Abili-Staff Ltd. Nearly $6 million was returned to buyers.

The tactics targeted in today’s case are not new — the FTC has a history of challenging counterfeit bizopp — but this time, the agency has a new tool to use against entrepreneurs: the revised Business Opportunity Rule, which requires broad bizopp sellers disclose key information upfront in a streamlined one-page document.

A message to those who aspire to be their own boss: before investing a dime, consult the Federal Trade Commission’s free resources to help you evaluate your existing situation and avoid Bizoop Barracuda.

What do bizopp sellers need to know? First, federal and state partners take bizopp deception seriously. Illegal activity can result in severe restraining orders, multi-million dollar judgments, and jail time. But for sellers eager to avoid law enforcement conflicts, we have information to help them comply with the law more easily. Watch this video to learn more about your obligations under the revised Business Opportunities Rules.

Best Beer Vending Machines 2024 (UK)

Question: Is there anything better than a cold, fresh, relaxing, delicious, proper beer at the bar? Answer (as if we actually needed an answer): Absolutely not.

We also enjoy drinking beer at home – a bag of cans or bottles are fine – but it’s not the same as a pint in the pub. This is why home water dispensers are becoming more and more popular. For beer lovers, a water dispenser should be used along with a coffee machine or a kettle – essential appliances that every kitchen needs.

But where to start? Different drinks meet different needs, and so do beer machines. So we’ve rounded up a range of machines suitable for every kind of beer lover.

How does a beer dispenser work?

It really depends on the brewer you buy. Some use kegs, some use their own technology, and some allow you to pour beer directly. We even have a dispenser that sucks the beer straight from the can and turns it into a pint of real ale. Most models use a keg or a variation of a keg.

How much beer can the brewer hold?

While it would be easier for brands to list keg and water dispenser capacities in pints – that’s how we like to drink, after all – they are measured in liters. Most dispensers can hold a keg of about 5 liters (1.76 pints per liter), but some can hold a little more or less.

What types of beer are used in vending machines?

Being limited to kegs doesn’t mean you’re limited in your choice of beer brands. In fact, there are a wide and growing variety of beer kegs on the market, with brands including Budweiser, Stella Artois, Baker’s, Brewdog, Leffe, Goose Island, Corona and Camden Hells. The Krups machines we’ve included in this roundup use their own style of kegs—oversized tanks called “torps”—and include a few alternative breweries and brands. The range includes Amstel, Moretti, Tiger, Lagunitas and Brixton, among others. Or you can purchase a home brewer that allows you to brew a variety of beers.

How much does a beer dispenser cost?

Luckily, this review of home beer dispensers includes a range of prices, from well under £100 to almost £400. There are cheaper options, but if you want high quality, be prepared to spend at least a few hundred pounds. Keep in mind that kegs also have ongoing costs. A 6-litre bucket costs between £30 and £45, depending on which brand you prefer.

What is the best beer maker for home use?

Like the beer itself, it all comes down to personal taste. Maybe you need something to keep the beer flowing at parties, or maybe you’re a serious beer connoisseur who wants the absolute best machine money can buy and the best-tasting brews. No matter what, there’s something for you on this list. We taste-tested the reviews and scoured the internet for great options for beer lovers of all kinds.

What are the best beer machines of 2024?

Microsoft warns that APT29 espionage attacks targeting global organizations are expanding

ReportJanuary 26, 2024Editorial DepartmentThreat Intelligence/Cyber Attacks

APT29 spy attack

Microsoft said Thursday that Russian state-sponsored threat actors launched a cyberattack on its systems in late November 2023. They have been targeting other organizations and are now beginning to notify them.

This development comes just a day after Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) revealed that it had fallen victim to an attack by a hacker group tracked as APT29also known as BlueBravo, Cloaked Ursa, Cozy Bear, Midnight Blizzard (formerly Nobelium), and The Dukes.

“This threat actor is known to primarily target governments, diplomatic entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and IT service providers in the United States and Europe,” Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Team said in a new advisory.

Internet security

The main goal of these espionage missions is to collect sensitive information of strategic interest to Russia by maintaining a foothold for an extended period of time without attracting any attention.

The latest revelations suggest the event may be larger than previously thought. However, the tech giant did not reveal which other entities were singled out.

APT29’s operations involve using legitimate but compromised accounts to gain and expand access within target environments and fly under the radar. It has also been known to identify and abuse OAuth applications for lateral movement between cloud infrastructure and for post-breach activities such as email harvesting.

“They leverage multiple initial access methods, ranging from credential theft to supply chain attacks, leveraging on-premises environments to move laterally to the cloud, and leveraging the service provider’s chain of trust to gain access to downstream customers,” Microsoft noted.

Another notable tactic is the use of compromised user accounts to create, modify and grant high privileges to OAuth applications, which they can abuse to hide malicious activity. The company notes that this allows threat actors to maintain access to the application even if they lose access to the initially compromised account.

These malicious OAuth applications were ultimately used to authenticate to Microsoft Exchange Online and target Microsoft corporate email accounts to steal data of interest.

Internet security

In a November 2023 incident against Microsoft, threat actors used a password spray attack to successfully infiltrate legacy non-production test tenant accounts that did not have multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled.

Such attacks are launched from a decentralized residential proxy infrastructure to hide their origin, allowing threat actors to interact with compromised tenants and Exchange Online through a vast network of IP addresses that are also used by legitimate users.

“Due to the high translation rate of IP addresses, Midnight Blizzard uses residential proxies to obfuscate connections, making traditional indicators of compromise (IoC)-based detection unfeasible,” Redmond said. This makes it imperative for organizations to take measures to defend themselves. Malicious OAuth applications and password spraying.

New CherryLoader malware mimics CherryTree to deploy PrivEsc vulnerability

ReportJanuary 25, 2024Editorial DepartmentThreat Intelligence/Malware Research

CherryLoader malware

A new Go-based malware loader called cherry loader Discovered by threat hunters in the wild, it can deliver additional payloads to compromised hosts for subsequent exploitation.

Arctic Wolf Labs, which discovered the new attack tool in two recent intrusions, said the loader’s icon and name disguised itself as the legitimate CherryTree note-taking application to trick potential victims into installing it.

Researchers Hady Azzam, Christopher Prest and Steven Campbell said: “CherryLoader was used to remove one of two privilege escalation tools, PrintSpoofer or JuicyPotatoNG. One, then runs a batch file to establish persistence on the victim device.”

In another novel twist, CherryLoader also includes modularization capabilities, allowing threat actors to swap vulnerabilities without recompiling the code.

Internet security

It is unclear how the loader was distributed, but attack chains examined by the cybersecurity firm show CherryLoader (“cherrytree.exe”) and its associated files (“NuxtSharp.Data”, “Spof.Data” and “Juicy”). .Data”).Data”) is contained in a RAR archive file (“Packed.rar”) hosted on IP address 141.11.187[.]70.

Downloaded with the RAR archive is an executable (“main.exe”) that is used to decompress and launch the Golang binary, and it only fires if the first argument passed to it matches the hardcoded MD5 password hash. will continue.

The loader then decrypts “NuxtSharp.Data” and writes its contents to a file on disk named “File.log”, which in turn is designed to use fileless techniques to decode “Spof.Data” into “12. log” and run something called process ghosting, which was first exposed in June 2021.

“The modular design of this technique allows threat actors to replace Spof.Data with other vulnerable code,” the researchers said. “In this case, Juicy.Data containing different vulnerabilities can be used without recompiling File. .log.”

Internet security

The process associated with “12.log” is linked to an open source privilege escalation tool called PrintSpoofer, while “Juicy.Data” is another privilege escalation tool called JuicyPotatoNG.

After successfully elevating privileges, a batch file script named “user.bat” is executed to set persistence on the host and disable Microsoft Defender.

“CherryLoader is [a] The newly discovered multi-stage downloader exploits different encryption methods and other anti-analysis techniques to attempt to detonate alternative, publicly available privilege escalation vulnerabilities without requiring any code to be recompiled. ” the researchers concluded.

Tech giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise was attacked by Russian hackers, related to Democratic National Committee breaches

ReportJanuary 25, 2024Editorial DepartmentCyber attack/data leakage

Russian hackers

Kremlin-linked hackers are suspected of penetrating the cloud email environment of information technology company Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to steal email data.

“Beginning in May 2023, threat actors accessed and accessed a small number of HPE mailboxes belonging to individuals belonging to our cybersecurity, go-to-market, business units and other functions,” the company said in a U.S. regulatory filing. Stolen data.” Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The intrusion has been attributed to a Russian state-sponsored group called APT29, which has also been tracked by names such as BlueBravo, Cloaked Ursa, Cozy Bear, Midnight Blizzard (formerly Nobelium), and The Dukes.

Days ago, Microsoft suggested that the same threat actor breached its corporate systems in late November 2023, stealing emails and attachments from senior executives in the company’s cybersecurity and legal departments and others.

Internet security

HPE said it was notified of the incident on December 12, 2023, meaning the threat actor persisted undetected in its network for more than six months.

It also noted that the attack may be related to a previous security incident, also attributed to APT29, which involved unauthorized access and exfiltration of a limited number of SharePoint files back in May 2023. It received an alert about malicious activity in June 2023.

However, HPE stressed that the incident has not had any significant impact on its operations so far. The company did not disclose the scale of the attack or the exact email messages that were accessed.

APT29, assessed as part of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), has been behind a number of high-profile hacks in recent years, including the 2016 attack on the Democratic National Committee and the 2020 breach of the SolarWinds supply chain.

The first bipedal robot arrives at BMW factory

BMW has signed an unprecedented agreement to have “humanoid” robots working at one of its factories. The robots are designed to operate more flexibly than traditional industrial robots and are said to assist luxury carmakers in various parts of the manufacturing process.

The robots, designed by California-based robotics company FigureAI, are described as “universal” robots, meaning they can be used to perform any number of physical tasks. The bipedal robot, simply called “Figure 01,” stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, and has five fingers that the company claims can be used to physically construct objects. On its YouTube channel, Figure shows a video of a robot making coffee. Another video shows the robot zipping across a room on its two sturdy legs.

That said, it’s not entirely clear what the robot would actually do in this situation.related Press release Talk of “deploying humanoid robots in automotive manufacturing environments” and claims that the robots will focus on “difficult, unsafe or tedious tasks” all sound rather vague.

The press release further states that as part of the first phase of the deal, the two companies will work together to “identify initial use cases for Figure robots in automotive production.” Again, the wording here makes it sound like neither company has a good idea of what the robots will actually do. After the two companies finally reach an agreement on Figure 01’s capabilities, some of the robots will be deployed at one of BMW’s manufacturing facilities in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

“For decades, single-purpose robotics has saturated the commercial market, but the potential of general-purpose robotics has not been fully exploited,” said Brett Adcock, CEO of Figure. “Figure’s robots will enable companies to increase productivity, reduce costs and create a safer, more consistent environment.”

Figure has been steadily releasing photos and videos of its new hires:

Technology companies around the world are currently racing to produce the first generation of “humanoid” robots. While robots have been functioning in factories and warehouses for years, the new robot’s human form factor is thought to bring many additional benefits to more complex industrial jobs. Of course, this raises concerns that robots will (eventually) take away a lot of human jobs. Figure’s CEO claims that his company has no interest in taking people’s jobs — and, of course, that’s what he says.

Gizmodo reached out to Figure for more details about the deal, and we will update this story if we hear back.

Patch your GoAnywhere MFT now

ReportJanuary 24, 2024Editorial DepartmentVulnerability/Endpoint Security

A critical security vulnerability has been disclosed in Fortra’s GoAnywhere managed file transfer (MFT) software that could be abused to create new administrator users.

Tracked as CVE-2024-0204this question has a CVSS score of 9.8 out of 10.

“An authentication bypass in Fortra GoAnywhere MFT prior to 7.4.1 allowed unauthorized users to create administrator users through the admin portal,” Fortra said in an advisory posted on January 22, 2024.

Internet security

Users unable to upgrade to version 7.4.1 can apply a workaround in non-container deployments by deleting the InitialAccountSetup.xhtml file in the installation directory and restarting the service.

For container-deployed instances, it is recommended to replace the archive with an empty archive and restart.

Mohammed Eldeeb and Islam Elrfai of Cairo-based Spark Engineering Consultants are thought to have discovered and reported the flaw in December 2023.

Horizon3.ai, a cybersecurity company, has released a proof-of-concept (PoC) vulnerability for CVE-2024-0204. The company stated that the issue is caused by a path traversal vulnerability in the “/InitialAccountSetup.xhtml” endpoint. The vulnerability can be exploited to create administrative users.

“The simplest indicator of compromise that can be analyzed is any new addition to the admin user group in the GoAnywhere Admin Portal Users -> Admin Users section,” said Horizon3.ai security researcher Zach Hanley.

Internet security

“If the attacker has left this user here, you may be able to observe their last login activity here to estimate the approximate date of the compromise.”

While there is no evidence that CVE-2024-0204 is actively exploited in the wild, last year the Cl0p ransomware group abused another flaw in the same product (CVE-2023-0669, CVSS score: 7.2), resulting in nearly 130 victims attack.

eBay plans to cut 1,000 jobs because it’s not growing fast enough

E-commerce company eBay said today it plans to lay off 1,000 employees, or about 9% of its workforce, due to current economic conditions. The company said in a blog post that it also plans to cut contract positions in the coming months.

CEO Jamie Iannone acknowledged that the company was hiring quickly but was not growing fast enough to justify the headcount.

“Despite external pressures, such as a challenging macroeconomic environment, we know we can do better through factors within our control. While we have made progress on our strategy, our total headcount and spend have exceeded growth of our business,” Iannone said in a note to employees on Tuesday.

“To address this, we are implementing organizational changes, aligning and integrating certain teams to improve the end-to-end experience and better meet the needs of our customers around the world.”

The company joins Google, Amazon (including Twitch and Audible), Discord, Duolingo, Pixar and Unity, among many other organizations, in announcing layoffs in January 2024.

In the third quarter of 2023, eBay’s revenue was US$2.5 billion and profit was US$1.3 billion. However, the company gave weak fourth-quarter guidance as it sees consumer spending on a downward trajectory. The company also made $2.2 billion last year from selling its stake in online advertising business Adevinta to Permira and Blackstone. In July, the e-commerce company acquired Certilogo, which provides digital IDs for clothing. eBay will report fourth-quarter earnings next month.

The company has been embroiled in some controversy of late. Earlier this month, it agreed to pay $3 million in connection with an online tracking case involving an American couple’s businesses. Last September, the Justice Department accused the e-tailer of selling products that could harm the environment and public health.
